Anyone tried Google Drive already? 5GB free space, in Google Apps seems to be just tied in with Docs. We're getting this message at the moment from drive.google.com

Google Drive is not yet enabled
for the The Nibble domain

But sounds like this is a known issue and Google Drive should become available shortly.

Google+ and Google Voice for The Nibble

Great news, Bits! Two new services have been enabled in our Google Apps domain: Google+ and Google Voice.

Google+ is the much anticipated Facebook killer long delayed but now release. Check the docs. You can now use your GA account as a Google+ contact so if you’ve been holding out for that switch-over, that wait is over!

Google Voice lets you use Google as a VoIP -> POTS gateway. So now with your GA account you can sign up a phone number and make calls under your account.

Moving Blogs to Blogger

After much foot dragging and fiddling around, I have finally started moving blogs off of Wordpress on Alia and over to Blogger.

I have started by moving my own blog using Wordpress2Blogger. This pulled the whole message archive, the comments, tags, and pages over including preserving published vs. draft states. This makes the third full migration and fourth platform for my blog so this content has come from fingering (.plan), to a custom PHP blog I wrote the software for myself, to Wordpress, and now to Blogger. And other than some of the initial .plan posts which were never archived, I've managed to keep the entire archive from 2003.

The biggest amount of effort in moving from WP to Blogger is setting up the site layout. Keeping lists of links and pages is pretty much manual but as Blogger has widgets for these, its not particularly onerous. And switching DNS. From what I can tell, the links are all being preserved at least on my own blog so it should be just a matter of waiting.

Once my blog is moved over, I'll move the main Nibble blog and if that works fine, I'll encourage the couple other bits here to move their blogs as well which will get me closer to offloading the last of the applications running on Alia.

Email Delegation

I learned just today that you can delegate access in gmail to other users allowing another user to view and user your email - sharing your mailbox without your password. This feature is also available in Google Apps but has to be enabled. So I've enable this on thenibble.org domain. To share a mailbox, login, go to the settings, and on the Accounts tab you can share the mailbox from there. But only to users within the domain and it takes up to an hour for a delegation to become active.

Google is enabling all Google Apps domains (e.g. thenibble.org) to work as authentication for all the services that you would normally need a personal Google account for. This, I think, includes Blogger, Reader, Picasa, and more. Google just posted about this here:

The one thing to be aware of is that if you were previously using your thenibble.org email address as a personal Google account (with Reader, Blogger, etc), you will be prompted the next time you visit one of the applicable services to choose your account. Google assures us that no data will be lost.

For now I have made myself the only "pilot" user of this service. Everyone will be switched over in January 2011 but if you want your account switched sooner, let me know.

Google Wave is available now for Apps and so we now have access to Wave for The Nibble:

It's a handy web-based collaboration app. Basically a glorified white-board in which multiple users can simultaneously collaborate over the Internet. With Wave you can drop-in gadgets to add more features from simple yes/no/maybe polls to mind maps and multi-media.

Moving to Google Apps

I'm in the process of moving email and chat for thenibble.org over to Google Apps. Google will provide the full reliability of their service along with ease of use and maintenance for a personalized domain for free (up to 50 users).

So all mail will be available via mail.thenibble.org and from here you can setup stuff like mail forwarding or IMAP access etc. Currently, your old mail won't be in the new system, but I intend to do a mass migration of existing mail once the new setup has stabalized a little (within the next week or so).

The other part is chat. Users shouldn't need to change much as I've got "jabber.thenibble.org" pointing to the new server, but these are Google's instructions:

But as I mentioned, "jabber.thenibble.org" points to the right place so where you provide the Jabber server on the advanced tab, you can use either talk.google or jabber.thenibble.

We're still shaking everything out like group chat and that kind of stuff, so I guess it will be a bit of a work-in-progress.

After several years of getting gouged for the nibble.bz domain name registration, it's finally lapsing and will lapse on October 17th. Many existing services have been switched over to thenibble.org and some stuff like the mail server config and SSL certs need to be changed.

Hmph, I guess there's just not that much to say about this. Just let me know if there's anything on nibble.bz I need to change to thenibble.org.

I've installed Mailman on Alia as the list manager and swapped out the static alias for the nibble, so now nibble@thenibble.org (or whatever domain you'd prefer) goes into mailman so it's got web-based email archives and all that good stuff. It's here for more info:

Nibble Website Moved

The Nibble website has moved from our old domain (nibble.bz) to the new one, thenibble.org. Wordpress should happily redirect any links to the old pages over to the new URL. So until nibble.bz actually goes away, we should be all good.

Websites and Database Moved

I have moved all of the web and database stuff off of Jessica (the VM) and onto Alia. There's slightly different OS and application versions specifically with regards to Wordpress. I tried to get the themes and plugins moved over and hopefully that about covers it but there may be some quirkyness with the new setup so please let me know if you run across any oddities.

Also, I'm going to shutdown my "archangel.nibble.bz" wordpress, it was really just setup as a test thing. So any posts that aren't going in my regular blog (http://dl.nibble.bz/~archangel) I'm just going to post directly here.

And in case you're wondering, the server is Ubuntu 8.04.

WordPress is a Bit Hooped

Since the upgrade to Etch, WordPress is a bit hooped. All the uploaded content (themes, plugins, images) were being stored under /usr/share which was not being backed up, so all that is gone. Also, it seems that when you login, you get the "upgrade your wordpress database" prompt and it gets a bit messed up. Images (and the images are there anyhow) and Pages show up as blog posts instead (crappy). And the themes seem to be totally broken. And we don't have any links.

It would seems that WordPress's bastard combination of database and file-based storage has gone a little haywire.

Nibble Logo

The topic of the "official" nibble logo came up recently and Dante managed to find one. I can't remember if it's saved somewhere. Anyhow, I just found one as well, and this is the one I remember and I really dig it:

I vaguely remember a few more. Something with a circle, I don't know. Anyone else got good ones from "the long long ago" or else good suggestions for a new one?

It's Officially a Love-Hate Relationship

It is now officially a love-hate relationship with WordPress and the home page for the Nibble.

Love in that I just figured out that the Joomla site has been completely abandoned. I have just updated the Apache config to redirect the main pages (www.nibble.bz and nibble.bz) to blog.nibble.bz. The nibble is going with WordPress in sickness and in health.

And on the hate (slash sickness) side, WordPress is really screwing up the RSS feeds. There was some fancy trick being used such that sites like FeedBurner could ask if there were updates to the page rather then fetch the whole page right away. It turns out that was too fancy. It broke all the RSS stuff (so far as we could tell). The fix is discussed here, basically you just comment out the "conditional get" crap which doesn't work. So now the feeds are working... Well rather, they're working fine for excessory but not me. Well, they're kindof working. Ugh, this bug will be fixed in an upcoming release, I'm sure.

IIRC, the templates for Wordpress are reasonably easy to edit from within the site. There's also some settings we need to change to allow posting/commenting directly without admin intervention, but I'm quite sure it can be done.

And we need to setup/fix group permissions so we can all upload new themes and plugins.
